Retaining Walls

The Black Hills terrain creates plenty of need for retaining walls — from managing grade changes on hillside lots to preventing erosion and creating usable flat space. D&D Concrete & Construction designs and builds retaining walls that provide reliable slope stabilization, erosion control, and beautiful hardscaping throughout the Rapid City area. Retaining walls are engineered structures that hold back soil and manage grade changes on your property. We build walls ranging from small garden-level walls to large structural walls several feet tall that require engineering and permits. Our retaining wall services include site evaluation and engineering coordination, poured-in-place concrete walls, reinforced block walls, tiered/terraced wall systems, drainage integration, and decorative finishes. Proper retaining wall construction in the Black Hills must account for soil conditions, drainage, frost depth, and local building codes. Drainage is especially critical — water behind a wall that freezes can generate enormous pressure. We integrate proper drainage systems into every retaining wall we build. Whether you need a retaining wall for a hillside home, to prevent erosion, to create usable yard space, or to add structure to your landscaping, D&D delivers walls built to last through decades of South Dakota weather.

Retaining Walls FAQ

Do retaining walls need a permit in Rapid City?

Retaining walls over 4 feet tall (measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall) typically require a building permit and may require structural engineering. We handle the permitting process for you.

How long do concrete retaining walls last?

Properly engineered and built concrete retaining walls can last 50+ years with minimal maintenance. Drainage is the key factor — especially in our climate where freeze-thaw can damage walls with poor drainage.

Can you build retaining walls on steep hillside lots?

Yes. We have experience building retaining walls on steep Black Hills terrain. Tiered wall systems are often the best approach for managing significant grade changes.
